If January was the free trial and February was supposed to be the do-over for the new year, I would like to speak to a manager because I believe I am owed a refund.
The beginning of this year has been wild on both a personal and a global level, and I’m not gonna lie; the idea that we are already on the second of March is completely blowing me. Why is time going by so fast?
If anything, it’s a reminder that we don’t have one minute to waste on anything or anyone that doesn’t serve us. I’m going to work harder to be mindful of that.
The majority of my time these first two months of 2024 has been spent reading and writing with some other miscellaneous activities thrown in, and I love that for me.
Let’s get into the reading.
According to my Kindle app, I’ve read every single day for the last 24 weeks straight – a total of 122 days in a row with no skips, which is huge for me considering I was in a big reading slump until the end of September last year.
I’ve managed to make reading a regular part of my day, and I love that for me. I usually read in bed at night just before going to sleep, but there are times throughout the day when I may grab my Kindle and sneak in a few pages in between tackling things on my to-do list because the book I’m currently reading at the time is that good.
I started the year out finishing my quest to read everything ever written by elle kayson. I became obsessed with her writing after reading her book “Demon’s Dream,” which I mentioned in a previous post, but I will gush about it again here because the book was that good.
“Demon’s Dream” is 750 pages of urban romance, and when I tell you every page of that book had me hooked, I am not exaggerating. I heard about it on BookTok, and I haven’t seen a bad review for that book yet. It has a 4.9 rating on Amazon and a 4.8 rating on GoodReads, and that is with 6,158 and 5,107 reviews respectively.
Everyone who reads this book enjoys it. I have even had people who’ve read it based on my recommendation come back and tell me how much they loved it.
That book has me in a chokehold, and I’m going to be honest: I keep rereading it over and over again. I bought it on Kindle, so in addition to whatever book I am currently reading, I read a chapter or two in Demon’s Dream every single day as well, and when I finish it, I turn right back to the beginning and start all over again.
I practically know the book by heart.
And because the writing and storytelling is so good, I’ve made a lot of notes and highlighted a lot of passages in the book; each time I re-read it, I end up adding even more notes. It’s that good.
I’ve gone off on a tangent though. I was starting to tell you about the books I’ve read since the beginning of the year, and at the beginning of the year, I was still in my elle kayson era, so I was reading the last book on my list, “What An Heiress Wants.”
Based on a recommendation from none other than K’Wan himself, I followed that up by reading the “Secrets of a Side Bitch” series by Jessica N. Watkins. There are five books in that series, and I finished the series in five days, so that should tell you how good it was. I’m adding more of her books to my TBR (to-be-read list).
“A Forbidden Hood Love” was co-written by elle kayson and Tyanna. I liked the story and the characters, but I could tell when the writing switched between the two authors, and that was a little distracting because their writing styles are different.
“Only For The Week” by Natasha Bishop is another book that came highly recommended by BookTok. I read this book in two days. It’s an African-American romance, and the story is so beautiful, I fell in love with every part of it. The way the MMC loved on the FMC was breathtaking.
And because it was so good, I went on to devour an entire three-book series by Natasha Bishop – the “Lost & Found series” – in four days. I was sad when I realized she only has four books published so far because her romances are beautiful and captivating. I could not put those books down, and it made it hard to go to sleep on time each night. I can’t wait to read whatever she comes up with next.
Based on a recommendation from Britni Danielle, I decided to jump into some books by Christina C. Jones, beginning with the “Truth and Lies” series and followed by the “Inevitable” series, both of which were very good. I finished the latter series last night.
The new book I’m starting is “Before I Let Go” by Kennedy Ryan. This is another book that is being talked about all over BookTok, especially since the second book in the series, “This Could Be Us,” comes out on Tuesday. I plan to read both back to back.
I’ve read other books by Kennedy Ryan already, including the “Grip” trilogy and “Reel.” I loved them all. Much like Christina C. Jones, her entire catalog is on my TBR because I love her writing.
I’m happy to be in a space where I feel very much in love with books again. Reading is so relaxing, and I love getting lost in a good story.
Miscellaneous:
The way “Yeah Glo!” is my current theme song. It gets me so hype. Plus my girl floated on this track. I said this on social media, and I’m going to say it here too; I’m going to find the instrumental of this song and make my own auntie remix of it. I’m going to call it “Yeah Mo!”
LeBron James hit 40,000 career points last night, and that makes him the first player in NBA history to ever do it. Put some respect on that man’s name (especially you, Skip Bayless). Yeah Glo!
Of course, the Lakers went on to lose to the Denver Nuggets, which is annoying, but it’s also expected because they are playing so inconsistently this season. It’s aggravating as a fan, but I’m Team Blouses all day no matter what, so it’s always going to be LakeShow on mine.
That’s not as embarrassing as what happened to the Golden State Warriors this afternoon, however.
They were down 44 points at the half against the Celtics. That is both a franchise record lead at the half for the Celtics as well as a franchise record deficit for the Warriors. Yikes.
Steve Kerr didn’t even put the starters back in during the second half because I guess at that point they had determined the game was a lost cause.
They ended up losing 140-88. 52 whole points. I can’t remember ever seeing them give this poor a showing, and I actually like the Warriors.
They are doing a reboot of the “Naked Gun” series with Liam Neeson, and while this actually has the potential to be funny (did you see him on “Atlanta”?), who asked for this, really?
Do you watch telenovelas? I’m currently watching “La Reina del Sur” on Netflix. It’s the original telenovela that “Queen of the South” is based on/adapted from. I love how the lyrics of the theme song change with each episode depending on what’s currently happening in the storyline.
Yesterday, I got one of those scam calls from “Chase” where I was told I needed to verify my identity or else have my accounts frozen. I was curious as to how they were doing this scam, so I clicked through to see if I was going to be speaking with a live person, but instead, I was immediately met with a recording asking me to enter my card number.
If you are a fan of the Trader Joe’s chicken soup dumplings, you should know there is a recall on them. Check your skus and take them back to the store for a credit if you need to.
Oddly enough, I went to the Trader Joe’s website expecting to see a prominent announcement so people could be aware, but if they did have an prominent announcement, maybe it was only on the first day they posted it. Now you have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to see it, and it’s off in the corner with other links under a “In Case You Missed It” label. Hm.
Bring back personal blogging.
