Today is one of those slow Saturdays I like to give myself every now and then.
I woke up late, lingered in bed longer than usual, then took the dog for a walk and grabbed coffee before running a few errands.
When I got home, I lit incense, played music, smoked good weed, and read my book.
It has been perfect.
I’m currently reading “Before I Let Go” by Kennedy Ryan, and I totally understand the hype it got on Booktok. I’m a little more than halfway finished with it, and the way she built up the tension between the two main characters is masterful.
This book is definitely an entree that was simmered slowly and watched over carefully, and to truly enjoy it, you have to take your time and savor each and every bite.
I’m not blowing through this book like I have done with some of the books I’ve read over the last few months. I find myself slowly taking in what she says and rereading some of the passages multiple times because the writing is beautiful and the storytelling is compelling.
I’ve read some reviews of it where people have complained that it took too long to get where it was going, and while I can see how they came away with that, I can also see why it’s necessary for the flow of the story and for who we learn these characters are and what they mean to each other.
Although I’m not done with the book, I can already say I recommend it for reading. Kennedy Ryan is good at what she does, and this is a good and realistic love story.
There’s no struggle love involved; it’s just a pure, second-chance love story, and it’s full of beautiful Black people, and I’m loving that so many writers are out there telling our stories like this, because it wasn’t always this way.
Miscellaneous
Do y’all watch “Love Is Blind”? The new episode dropped yesterday, and I had some thoughts, so I wrote about how “The way Clay handled AD on ‘Love Is Blind’ is typical male trash behavior.”
Have you heard the story about Celena Morrison, the executive director of the Office of LGBT Affairs for the city of Philadelphia? She was arrested this weekend alongside her husband Darius McLean, and the Philadelphia State Trooper involved was overly aggressive and violent. She captured the incident on video, and I wrote a column about it for theGrio: “Celena Morrison’s arrest video shows that 33 years after Rodney King, the police are still terrible”
I finally got the custom domain working for this blog, so now you an just type www.thejournalista.com or thejournalista.com and you will be brought directly here.
I accidentally broke my reading streak earlier this week because when I got in bed, it was already after midnight, so it didn't count as me reading on Monday. I'm legit SICK over it too.
I play the hell out of NY Times Games on a daily basis.
I messed up my Wordle streak because I forgot to play yesterday — again before midnight. I legit didn’t remember until 12:00 a.m. this morning, and yes, I was annoyed.
That said Wordle 994 5/6

Facebook and Instagram were down the other day for a long period of time, and it was a reminder that we don’t own or operate these platforms, so even if we use them as tools to promote ourselves, our work, and our businesses, we should still have our own website, blog, newsletter, or something to be able to reach our audiences outside of those platforms owned by people who can shut them off at any given moment in time.
If all of your content only lives on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter, what are you going to do when it goes away?
This is why I’m bringing personal blogging back. Get into it.
The Lakers won last night because DLo carried the team on his back, and I loved watching every minute of it.
Been that, still that!! Say it louder for those in the back!
I LOVED Before I Let Go. It led me down a Kennedy Ryan rabbithole last year that I do not regret. I need to get into the sequel to that book, still havent cracked it open yet!
