Happy Sunday!
It’s been a while. How y’all been?
I want to welcome all the new people who have subscribed to me. I know a lot of you have found me by way of my Sarah Jane Comrie aka “Citi Bike Karen” coverage.
Welcome to off the record. This is me doing me for me only. I love that y’all like to read along as I do it, though.
I am a bit of an exhibitionist, and if there is a way to be both an exhibitionist and an introvert at the same damn time, I think I have figured that shit out.
That said, let’s get into all the shit I’ve written lately
Like I said, I have been writing a lot about Sarah Jane Comrie aka “Citi Bike Karen.”
It started with this op-ed for NewsOne, in which I explain how Sarah Jane Comrie is Carolyn Bryant 2.0. Then I wrote about how white people like Sarah Jane Comrie always get the benefit of the doubt in any situation. Finally, I interviewed the 17-year-old boy who refused to give Sarah Jane Comrie his bike. It was an exclusive.
For theGrio, I wrote about which piece of chicken is the best. The answer is the chicken thigh, but you should definitely read the piece to understand why. Pun intended. I don’t want to hear your wrong opinions about how this piece or that is better than the thigh. I’m honestly Helen Keller to the bullshit.
I also wrote about how the 50 Cent Cinematic Universe has me in a chokehold. I love the entire Power franchise, and I also love BMF. I will watch pretty much anything he puts his hands on at this point. It’s all over the top drama, bad bitches, drugs, and gang banging. I’m here for it.
I was tired of everyone trying to make the Citi Bike narrative be about “receipts” and who had the bike first and who had a right to the back and all that noise, so I wrote “The ‘receipts’ don’t matter. The bike doesn’t matter. Sarah Jane Comrie’s actions matter” for theGrio because FOCUS, PEOPLE.
But we all know that if there is one thing whiteness runs away from, it’s accountability, so I also wrote “Accountability is like kryptonite to whiteness.” Then I wrote “Here’s what Sarah Jane Comrie could do to fix the Citi Bike situation, but she won’t.”
I will keep writing about this as long as it remains a topic of conversation because I refuse to let the narrative be redirected from her behavior. That is what we are all concerned with, and that is what she needs to be accountable for.
I’ve begun using TikTok more actively, and I’ve done a number of videos on this topic that I’ve also shared on Instagram. My handle on all social platforms, including BlueSky, is thejournalista. Find me and check me out.
I can’t really read or respond to comments on my social posts right now because my notifications are insane and filled with racist trolls. My new favorite thing to do is write a thread and then hit “mute this conversation” so I don’t get notifications about it at all. Unfortunately, that means even people who want to genuinely engage with me get tuned out as well, and I don’t have a remedy for that at the moment.
My friends be writing too
I love having writing contemporaries. My peers are dope, and they are out here doing dope things, and I want to shine a light on some of the dope stuff from them that I’ve seen.
Y’all know I love me some Michael Harriot. He had a 4-part series run on theGrio last week talking about South Carolina’s critical race war on education. I highly encourage you to read parts 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Ketchum interviewed Styles P and wrote “Styles P is working to make hip-hop, and Black communities, healthier” for Andscape.
Panama Jackson wrote “We can all agree that Monet Tejada is the worst mother of all time, right?” because he is clearly as invested in the 50 Cent Cinenatic Universe as I am.
